About Muslims Mentoring Network
Why MMN
The believers, both men and women, are guardians of one another.
They encourage good and forbid evil, establish prayer and pay alms-tax, and obey Allah and His Messenger.
It is they who will be shown Allah’s mercy. Surely Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
Al-Quran 9:71
Globally, multinational industries and large organisations spend more than $50 Billion annually on leadership development. Majority of which is spent on talent development through mentoring programmes. Studies have shown that mentoring initiatives can motivate individuals to become more confident in themself and become more aware of their developmental needs. Mentoring programs have been shown to produce more inspiring and talented individuals. These individuals not only do well at education but also go on to develop in their careers, taking on senior management and leadership positions. Moreover, mentoring programs have produced individuals who are more engaged in their communities and go on to inspire others to do more.
As Muslims, we are facing crises internally from lack of identity, leadership and inspiration from within the community but also externally from islamophobia and institutional racism. We at Muslim Mentoring Network dream to change this status quo. We hope we can inspire individuals and communities to do more and be more, by connecting aspiring individuals with an experienced mentors, who can guide and inspire that individual to achieve his / her dreams.
Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran that believers are helpers, supporters and guardians of one other. As believers, we must be there for one another, encouraging one another to do good and help each other stay away from wrong or evil. We see strong evidence for this in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the Sahabah (RA).
There is strong evidence of mentoring in the Islamic tradition. There is no better example than our leader, our Prophet Muhammed PBUH, who was sent by Allah (SWT), as a guide and as a mentor to us. In His (PBUH) style of teaching and communication, we can see strong evidence of mentoring skills. He (PBUH) has mentored the Great Personalities of Islam: the Khulafa Rashiduns (RA) and great scholars such as Abu Hurairah (RA), Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA), Anas Ibn Malik (RA), the mother of the Believers Aisha (RA); unmatched military leaders (Kahlid Ibn Walid (RA), Abu Ubaidah (RA), Amar Ibn As (RA) and great nation builders, to name a few. Those who were mentored by the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), went on to mentor strong proteges themself and showed great care and skills in developing their proteges. These skills are learned from none other than the Master Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
We have a structured program of learning for both the mentor and their protegees so that every mentoring session can be effective and produce desired results. We will use the most current researched evidence on mentoring skills development, but put a strong emphasis on the traditional Islamic skills that have been transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This merger between the two systems is continuously evolving with new research and understanding and therefore we will see the continuous improvement of the skills and knowledge we transfer between our mentors and mentees at MMN.
Our mentors are required to complete our workshop on mentoring, and then complete a DBS check before registering as a mentor with MMN. We encourage our mentors to continuously improve their skills through further learning and through peer-to-peer review. MMN will organise learning programmes, workshops, seminars and online learning programmes to encourage our mentors to improve and develop their skills.
Our mentors are vetted and matched with the most suitable protege. Our mentors/mentees are required to provide a regular update on their activities so that we can ensure that both are happy with the relationship and continue to develop their success.
